AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF ALTERNATE HEMIPLEGIA OF CHILDHOOD

Alternate hemiplegia of childhood is a rare neurological condition seen in children. The child suffering from AHC, will have recurrent temporary loss of strength in the body which is marked by difficulty in walking, lifting hands on the affected side of the body for few days. Later child will be normal and after that other half of the body will have symptoms. The clinical manifestation may begin at birth to 4 years of age. There are, as of yet, no specific therapies that are uniformly effective in eliminating the episodes associated with AHC.

AHC childhood can be correlated with Ayurvedic concept of Skandagraha. Here a case of 8 year old male child had come to our hospital with recurrent alternate hemiplegic attacks having history of seizure attacks. At the end of 10days of treatment which included Panchakarma procedures along with internal medication resulted in 5-10% improvement in the overall effect of therapy. Now the child is able to walk on his own, goes to school by walking, peddles the bicycle and frequency of attack has reduced. This not only helped the child to perform daily activities, but relived the worry of the parents.
